GETTING THE LATEST UPDATES
|
|
In your web browser type in the URL http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com . On this site click on the phrase Product Updates. Microsoft will automatically check your operating system and detect what is installed and what isn't, and then present you with a list of downloads to choose from. Checking your system and suggesting possible downloads are done automatically - all you need to do is wait for the list. The very first time you access Windows Updates you will be presented with a screen asking to download a utility that Microsoft will use to check your system. Say OK to this download and then the process will follow.
Microsoft will offer you several different types of downloads, including critical updates, new versions of Internet Explorer, new desktop themes, International language support, multimedia downloads, drivers and miscellaneous categories. Two Techs recommends that you download any item listed as a critical update since these patches add significant security to your Internet experience. Critical updates can only be downloaded one at a time and Microsoft requires that you reboot your system after each critical update is installed. Always check for critical updates and make sure you download those first.
Two Techs also recommends that you download the latest version of Internet Explorer which will make your Internet experience more robust and more secure.
Two Techs recommends that you scroll to the bottom of the list of available downloads to check for updated drivers that may be available to your computer. Always download these latest driver updates unless you prefer to check for driver updates at the hardware manufacturer's web site.
Choose any other updates that you wish to add more pleasure to your Windows experience. Two Techs cautions against downloading any automatic update offers since they can be annoying and since they take you out of the decision making process. Visit this site periodically instead - about every 3-6 months - to see what new updates are available and select what interests you.
