Infected Computer
One of the most obvious signs that you have an infection is the way your computer operates. Typically a computer will run slower and slower as the infection progresses. This is because the infection is burdening the processor with excessive tasks. This can be hard to detect because there are other situations that can cause a computer to run slow. Another clue is when you experience odd results to something you have requested such as a program not running when you select it from your Program Menu or from a shortcut on your Desktop. Some clues are much more obvious such as when a windows pops up onto your screen with an alarming message telling you that your computer is infected and prompting you to click on their message or to purchase their product. You should never click on these windows when they appear.

  Problems With Web Browser
Another clue that you have an infection on your computer is by unusual browser behavior (such as Internet Explorer). One of the most common events is when the browser takes you to a different web page than what you typed in the Address Bar. This means that the infection is overriding your request and causing the browser to navigate to a different web page. Similarly if you discover that your Home Page has changed it is likely that an infection is commandeering your browser. Also an infection can cause the browser to become unable to go to any web site at all making it very difficult to resolve the problem.

  Email Infections
One of the most common instances of an infection is when it alters your email. A classic result of this is when the infection accesses your email contacts and sends an infected email to every account in the list without your being aware of it. Email can also be the source of an infection through an email that you receive. Clicking on a link, following the suggestions of the email or simply opening the email can sometimes be enough to result in an infection.

  Other Devices
An unusual development with an infected computer is to have other devices lose their ability to function. Printers stop printing. External hard drives become inaccessible. Even monitors may become unstable. In all these instances it isn't the device that has the problem but rather it is the computer. The infection in the computer keeps it from being able to properly communicate with the other device(s).

  Risk To Your Network
Some infections are designed to travel through networks and infect other computers within the system. Infections of this sort can render an entire network - an office, a home, or a large business - unable to accomplish anything as long as the infection has control. Obviously this can create a substantial loss of productivity, income and in some cases even data.
